We use selections in Photoshop to isolate editing to specific areas in an image, or for cutting out portions of an image. Similarly, masks are used to protect specific image areas from being modified, or for removing portions of an image. For a more thorough overview on the differences between masks and selections, see part two of my article, All About Masks.
The Marquee Selection ToolsUnless you’re entirely new to Photoshop, you probably have some familiarity with the marquee selection tools. It’s difficult to do much of anything in Photoshop without them. These include the rectangular marquee, the elliptical marquee, the single row horizontal, and single row vertical marquee tools. As you learned in a previous lesson, the shortcut key for the marquee tools is M and Shift M toggles the rectangular and elliptical marquee tools. Let’s look at some additional shortcuts for the marquee tools:
* Holding down the shift key while dragging a selection marquee constrains the selection to a square or circle.
* Holding down the shift key while dragging a selection marquee when an existing selection is active adds to the selection.
* Holding down the Alt/Option key while dragging a selection marquee when an existing selection is active subtracts from the selection.
* Holding down the Alt/Option key while dragging a selection marquee creates the selection from the center out from where you initially clicked.
* The Shift and Alt/Option modifier keys can be used together when making an initial selection to constrain proportions and draw from the center.
* The Shift and Alt/Option modifier keys can be used together when another selection is active to create a selection from the intersection (the areas where the two selections overlap).
* To reposition a selection while you are in the process of drawing it, hold down the spacebar. As long as the spacebar is held down you can move you selection, when you let up on the space bar you can go back to drawing your selection. The selection will not be finalized until you release the mouse button.
* You can move a selection after it has been finalized by moving the cursor inside the selection marquee as long as the marquee tool is active. The cursor will change to look like this and then you can click and drag the marquee into a new position. You can also use the arrows on your keyboard to reposition a selection.
* Ctrl/Command-A selects the entire image.
* Ctrl/Command-D removes the selection.
* Shift-Ctrl/Command-I inverts the selection.
* Ctrl/Command-H acts as a toggle to hide the marquee but preserves the selection.
Notes for Version 6.0
In Photoshop 6, you can also choose the add/subtract/intersect modifiers from the set of buttons on the options bar. Selection Tool Modifiers
In Photoshop 6, the Ctrl/Command-H shortcut toggles more than just the selection marquee, so you may need it to press the key combination multiple times before the marquee is hidden. You can control what items this toggle controls by checking them off in the View > Show submenu.
Marquee Tool OptionsThe marquee tools have some options you can access by double clicking the tool to bring the options palette to the front. You can adjust the feathering, anti-aliasing, and style.
* Feathering lets you fade the edge of the selection, but in most cases you will leave this setting to zero since there are more accurate ways of feathering a selection after it has been drawn.
* Anti-aliasing smoothes out the edges of the selection. You’ll rarely, if ever, need to deactivate this. It will be unavailable for the rectangle selection tool because rectangles always have hard edges.
* The style menu lets you make more precise selections.
o When constrained aspect ratio is chosen you can choose the ratio of width to height. With both values set to 1 you would only be able to draw a perfect square or circle. With a width of 1 and a height of 2 you would create a selection that is two times higher than the width, and so on.
o When fixed width is chosen you can enter a width and height in pixels and just click once to make a selection of that exact size.
Take some time now to try all these options using the marquee selection tools. When you’re ready, continue on to the next lesson on the lasso tools.

If you are trying to enhance an average digital photo then adding a hand-tinted look will create an awesome effect to the image making it look like a masterpiece. With just a couple of tints the photo will literally transform into photos that you will want to share with all of your family and friends.
Now the fist thing you need to do for this and any othe photo edit is to open the photo image and save it with a different name, so that you don\’t lose the original content. One tip would be to always save your image to the desk top so you will always be able to find it at at later date.
Open up the layers palette and drag the photo background layer to the copy icon, forming a new copy of your photo on a different layer and then hit “Target” select this new layer and press SHIFT+CTRL+U to remove the color from the digital photo. Finally hit CTRL+L to bring up the “Levels” dialog.
One good tips here is to remember to hit AUTO to see what it looks like and then tweak from there. Use the Black slider more to the right in order to darken the shadows, or you can move the White slider to the left in order to brighten the highlights and Click OK when you have finished.
The top showing black and white and with the layer still selected, select the eraser tool with a soft round brush set at round 5-10% opacity and about 30 pixels breadth. You will now be able to edit the areas where you would like to see a bit more color but bearing in mind that you are aiming at a nice soft and transparent look. If you need to UNDO at any time just hit CTRL+Z.
You can then increase the the brush size to enhance areas where you would like more color and then you can either merge all of the layers or just flatten and save your fabulous hand-tinted digital photo.

Using Photoshop Tutorials for Picture Effects

While a picture speaks a thousand words, those words tend to have one main meaning – with the possible exception of the still-mysterious Mona Lisa. But what if you had the chance to change those words? Are you interested in having that chance? If so, all you need to do is get help with a Photo Shop tutorial on effects.
Adobe Photo Shop today is the world’s leading digital imaging software program, and it allows users to edit their pictures with an amazing array of tools.
Tone – With just a click of your mouse, you can immediately turn your 100% colored photo into a black and white picture to make it seem older. You can also choose to give it a sepia look for a similarly quaint but more artistic impact.
Text – With the help of an Adobe Photo Shop tutorial on effects, you can also add cute text or captions to and within your photos. Unlike older programs which require you to copy and paste text with white backgrounds, Adobe Photo Shop has a transparent background so that only the very shapes of the letters are pasted on your photo. With this option, the text you’re adding will be made a part of the very photo.
Selection – Sometimes, you wish to create an effect on only one part of the photo. Adobe Photo Shop anticipates this need, and even better, lets you choose the shape of your selected part. When you’ve selected which part of the photo you wish to edit, all subsequent changes will then take effect on that part alone. It’s as easy and simple as that!
Mosaic – Remember your old art lessons in primary school and you had to create a mosaic project? Well, how about doing a mosaic version of your photo? It seems to require harder work with only your keyboard and mouse, but think again. Thanks to Adobe Photo Shop, you can create your own mosaic with just a click and even choose the cell size for your photo.
Blur – Faded patches in a photo are interesting, and you can intentionally make such patches on your photo if there are none to begin with. Under the same category of tools – Filter – in which you’ll also find other effect options like Mosaic and Pointillize, you can use the Blur option and apply it to a selected part of your photo or all of it. Keep pressing the Blur button until you reach your preferred degree of blurriness.
Color Pencil – Have you ever imagined what your photo would look like if it had been drawn using colored pencils? Imagine no more with the help of Adobe Photo Shop. Under the colored pencil function (still in the Filter category), you can also choose the degree of stroke pressure, paper brightness, and pencil width applied to your photo.
Neon Glow – Do you want your photo to outshine everything else in its vicinity? You can literally achieve that with the neon effects of Adobe Photo Shop. Once more, it can be a part of or the whole photo that could be changed with this option. The impact of this function can be modified according to neon color, glow, and brightness.
There are many other effects that Adobe Photo Shop can provide you and to change your photo, but self-study and self-exploration won’t get you anywhere fast anytime soon. If you want to learn now, find the best Photo Shop tutorial in the Internet and start watching.

EXTREME PHOTOSHOP DVD
July 29, 2010 by creativedesignidea
From an early age Iâ??ve always been interested in art in some way or another and Iâ??ve always created my own unique designs. I donâ??t know what it is but it never fails to give me a buzz, not to mention feeling very proud, of my finished unique achievements. However, nowadays it seems as though pencils and paint are becoming a thing of the past and are a tad ‘old school’. Anyway as of late I have been particularly fascinated in learning how to use Adobe Photoshop. You see my art and design skills have always been with pencils and paint, so I thought it was about time I moved with the times and brought my artistic flair into the 21st century. Donâ??t get me wrong though, Iâ??m not saying that pencils and paint designs are becoming extinct, far from it!. It is just that the more time I spend online, the more I seem to be seeing unbelievable and literally outstanding designs created with Adobeâ??s Photoshop software.
Now, thereâ??s absolutely no denying that whenever I see these outstanding unique creations available online, I canâ??t help myself from thinking, I want to be able to do this!. What better way to do this than using Photoshop and some type of training material?. I have spent the past few weeks researching what people classed as the best software available for creating amazing artwork pieces using Photoshop. Believe me there are countless ebooks and articles on performing particular tasks available with Photoshop. The thing about me though is Iâ??m more of a visual learner as opposed to reading and I just seem to pick up things a lot easier watching how things are done. I then researched for Photoshop training ‘online’ or in ‘DVD’ format, with larger screen videos making learning a lot easier for me to follow along. Anyway I found a great site called Lynda.com that offered what looked like some pretty good training Photoshop DVDâ??s. The only thing with this site was at the time of visiting, there were no less than 21 yes thatâ??s not a typo, 21 different Photoshop training DVDâ??s!. Needless to say, when youâ??re a beginner, which do you choose?. As I wasnâ??t going to purchase every single one of them due to the astronomical costs involved!.
Through my research I even discovered tons of free tutorials on YouTube which I thought was great!. What more could I ask for?. The only thing with YouTube is that although there are plenty of great tutorials on there, they really do suffer in visual quality making it a little difficult to follow for us mere newbie learners. Still determined though I persisted in my searches and found what seemed to suit my needs. It was a Photoshop training DVD and it showed me exactly what I would learn from the training and it even has (on the website) a short taster of all the tutorialsâ?¦This definitely looked like the one for me. The main thing for me was, would this particular unique Extreme Photoshop DVD live up to what the site was claiming?. After all, I was a complete newbie to Photoshop so the training couldnâ??t be too advanced so as to confuse me. The content of the tutorials was therefore a complete surprise as the main ‘creative’ functions covered are a great insight into the awesome power of Photoshop, and I have presented a brief description of them below for you to consider:
Â
Learn how to apply a great looking sketch effect to any of your photographs. Showing you in detail how simple it really is to create even if you are a complete beginner to Photoshop.
Â
Learn how to create an abstract image which imitates fibre optics, because when you see the finished image it really does resemble fibre optics…This effect is done using only Photoshop tools and is created from a plain white blank canvas.
Â
Create some convincing 3D ext and place it into a photograph with amazing realism. This is purely created in Photoshop with no other software involved. The results can be astounding.
Â
Create a pop art style effect from a plain photograph. This effect can be applied to literally any photograph, such as your favourite pop star or film star. Just go for it.
Â
Next take on a promotional theme. This concept is to promote a training shoe (or sneaker depending on where you live) This technique can be applied to many other products.
Â
Turn a simple photograph into a kind of fantasy theme with a glowing beam of light. Also adding some particle sparkles cascading from the light beam and some background bubbles.
Â
Create a convincing grass texture look. Again, this is created purely with the Photoshop filters and nothing else. Start with a plain white canvas and absolutely no photographs are used for this project.
Â
Transform a simple picture of a house into a scary haunted house. This involves changing the image from daytime to night time and adding all the other elements to complete the effect.
Â
Create a vicious looking claw slashing through a steel door. Again this is created from a plain white canvas and no photos were used for this apart from adding a little texture to certain parts of the image.
Â
Learn the technique behind creating an authentic looking movie poster. This is a great way to fool your friends into thinking you’re a film star by creating an action thriller poster with you taking the lead role.
Â
The above tutorials add up to over five and a half hours of superb training and will truly catapult your knowledge of graphical design and open up the Photoshop ‘world’ for you.
Â
I have got to say that I was very pleased overall with the training techniques. I personally found them very easy to follow along with and in general simple training methods. It is a very simple package to use and is a professionally put together package with well designed menus leading to all the tutorials. I was so impressed with the overall service and more importantly the product
Â
So if youâ??re looking for something powerful that isnâ??t overly complex, whether youâ??re a beginner to Photoshop or an intermediate, then the Extreme Photoshop DVD is just the ticket. Not only are its results assured, but the manner in which it delivers them makes it a clear front runner in terms of being simple and very effective for teaching its pupils!. No longer do you need to worry about paying tutors hundreds of dollars for expensive college courses, there’s absolutely no need to waste your money anymore!. You’ll learn how to create top-level special effects for eye-catching movie posters, album covers, brochures, mailing pieces, magazine covers, article illustrations, and a wide range of web site graphics and more.
Â
Discard everything else you thought you knew about Adobe Photoshop and begin to understand the real techniques!.Â
Independent and individual reviews on anything that I believe will benefit everyone.
